In 1898, Belgian explorer Adrien de Gerlache led the Belgian Antarctic Expedition aboard the ship Belgica to explore the waters of Antarctica. When the vessel became trapped in the ice of the Bellingshausen Sea, the crew was forced to survive the first Antarctic winter ever spent locked in the ice.
